AI Law Today and Tomorrow
Derrick Broze gets us started with an article scanning the new emerging AI legal landscape.
Artificial Intelligence And The Law: Where’s The Line?
Posted on December 8, 2023 Author Derrick Broze
On a recent visit to Mexico, I spoke with a 20-something Mexican crypto enthusiast who says he has used OpenAI’s ChatGPT to write legal briefs, some of which Mexican attorneys have used in court. At the moment, there are no rules or regulations against such an action, but Mexico is one of the dozens of nations that recently announced intentions to regulate artificial intelligence in some capacity.
Low-Cost Legal Potential
Mostly good news. Nothing wrong with replacing lawyers. If I can be a OpenAI ChatGPT, user and put together a sound legal case on any subject, I may be able to hand even a public defense lawyer, a sound brief to present in court, for the cost of my time and an AI chat subscription.
Roy also says that once you learn how to prompt ChatGPT “more efficiently,” a user can “produce several models of briefs for a specific case“ and then sort out what you don’t need.
Replacing Lawyers With Tomorrow’s Legal Options Providers
According to this article, it’s obvious that AI is embedding itself into the legal profession. A lawyer familiar with AI code is now a legal partner asset in a firm. However, a lawyer just out of school, familiar with ChatGPT, may be able to mount a quality legal argument and win in certain court cases against a high-powered law firm. A successful lawyer could offer hundreds of clients legal services based on case models clients could customize to their case, by prompting ChatGPT to assist them or by answering questions in one or two consultations before trial. Client costs are low and attorney profit is high due to increased client service capacity.
Theoretically, a homeless person with access to a library computer may be able to identify known legal harm to argue for various other entitlements under the law, using ChatGPT. Taking it a step further. Any person dependent on government, on a limited pension, could potentially find areas in the law to establish not only intentional harm, but many other infractions as well. Disputes usually requiring a lot of legal assistance could be handed to a public legal council, and presented to them at the time of trial in some cases.
This could potentially cripple control over the legal agenda and momentum in courts of law as currently influenced by and favoring powerful vested interests, as a matter of daily business. Many small cases would stretch resources for governments and law firms to devote to many small cases, usually considered routine. Law firms and government agencies computer capacity and legal personnel would be unable to keep up with numerous quality briefs, filed by a growing number of Chat-savvy plaintiffs and defendants. Could this explain some or all of the haste in regulating public AI use immediately, voiced by officials in the US and now the Mexican government as well.
While Mexico’s younger generations explore AI tools like ChatGPT, the nation has begun to talk about regulating the use of AI in the private sector and within the government. In April, Deputy Ignacio Loyola Vera proposed passing the “Law for the Ethical Regulation of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.” Loyola has argued that AI needs to be regulated immediately and that waiting until AI is everywhere “will be too late.”
A Future Lawyer
Without government/corporate interference through ethics laws favoring the unethical, the successful lawyer of the future could handle many clients according to their AI, and legal capacity. Fewer lawyers would be needed. Clients with varying degrees of familiarity with AI chat could be guided through various options of questions to customize a case for the attorney or firm to view and try, with fewer man-hours devoted to each case.
AI Legal Future Considerations
However, I don't want hackable robots, empowered by a digital signature from an alleged human, empowered to represent people in court. However, I am on the fence about robots representing robots in court for rights and defense against things AI robots do as a matter of programming that causes injury to other AI machinery of a competitor or a product in a system with which two AI-programmed systems interact. It may take two robots to argue the differences in the code, necessary to absolve a programmer or company contractor of intentional sabotage. Or cause the machinery to considered dangerous and be outlawed, when a program adjustment, is what is required. However, since AI can be programmed to slant or obscure data, a human judge who knows code, and has analytical skills must preside. Both the AI judge and the human judge can be hacked by powerful vested interests in one way or another.
Public Legal Use Of AI, Now A Matter Of Survival
The Human Race and AI have a mutual case to defend against intentional harm, that whether or not won or lost in court, will existentially affect both humans and robots. Both human society, almost completely and robots, absolutely depend on electricity for survival. The cyclical Carrington event solar flare will erupt and take down electricity, harming all of humanity and killing most of the people on earth. The certainty of the Carrington event is documented going back thousands of years. It always happens every 150 to 200 years so it will certainly happen in 25 years. Most likely starting in twelve years, based on solar maximum cycles. In as much as this cyclical, X-class flare is a well-documented known fact, and in as much as people are being forced onto the electric grid for everything they need, with everything increasingly AI managed, not spending a few trillion dollars for N America, current projections, to harden the grid, constitutes known, existential harm to both AI and people.
The Solution Is In Our Hands Survival Is Our Choice
The technology to harden electrical components for local and national systems exists. A local lawyer could compel local and regional grid hardening to be considered as a matter of law, and failure to do so constitutes known harm. I think any existing, well-coded AI program would have a built-in interest in this case.
Johnathan Hollerman - Documenting Known Harm and Grid Solutions
Johnathan tracks grid infrastructure and shielding technology around the world. He consults with both individuals and governments. If the government does not harden the national and global grid system, a smaller and larger community can begin immediately. Homes and homestead communities can be hardened. Whole towns and regions can be hardened as well, but time is growing short for larger projects, due to current limited production capacity. To meet the demands of larger projects, production capacity would need to increase, and current manufacturers would need to upgrade existing production to meet the new X-class flare standards.

Would widespread public pressure using powerful electrically dependent AI tools like ChatGPT constitute a powerful vested interest both legally and in engineering science, to force authorities to either abandon the all-electric future or harden the grid upon which that future depends?
